WHAT
I'm a big supporter of animal rights and abolishing factory farming, because of the horrible, inhumane conditions th animals live in. So I made a new meme to support Meat Free Week and Make it possible, 2 campaigns currently running which encourage a reduction in consumption of meat products.
WHY
Factory farming is incredibly cruel, and most of the animals spend their entire lives to cages in misery and suffering.1 I'm not going to go into details here, as it is very upsetting and confronting, but if you would like more details as to just where the meat you eat comes from, please visit the linked sites. Animal welfare groups globally have called for an end to intensive 'factory' farming practices used to meet our consumption demands. By choosing to give up meat (even if just for a week), or to not buy factory farmed meat, you are effectively voting with your wallet. And as we all know, money talks!
Scientists and Enviromentalists alike agree that reducing our meat consumption will that pressure off the planet's resources. And eating excessive meat also has serious health consequences. For example, eating too much processed meat can increase your risk of bowel cancer, type II diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, obesity, and reduced life expectancy.2 And that's just for starters!
Most importantly, whatever your choices, it is all about education, becoming more aware about where your food comes from and then having the knowledge to make informed choices.
Even though meat free week is has come to a close, you can still do a meat free week anytime you choose, and make a donation. Happy (meat free) eating!
